Jakarta - The COVID-19 pandemic has caused deep sorrow to the entire world. The medical world in Indonesia is no exception, which has lost thousands of its best health workers in service on the front lines.
Based on the nakes.laporcovid19.org page as of September 10, 2021, nearly 2,000 health workers have died fighting COVID-19, including 688 doctors, 665 nurses, and 389 midwives. Health workers as the front guard need the strongest immune system to remain excellent in serving the needs of COVID-19 patient services.
Government Support for Health Workers
Government support for health workers is not only shown in material form, such as allowances, incentives, and compensation. To equip health workers to face the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic, since the beginning of 2021 the government has prioritized the first phase of COVID-19 vaccination for health workers throughout Indonesia.
At the end of August 2021, the third phase of COVID-19 vaccination (booster vaccination) is being carried out for health workers throughout Indonesia.
You too can support health workers
"Currently, the pandemic is entering its second peak, after last year it had receded. People need to be vigilant in tightening health protocols and need to build immune system optimization protocols," said Dr. Widya Murni as a representative of the Indonesian General Practitioner Association (PDUI) Central in Laserin Talk Show on Radio MTB 102.7 FM Surabaya.
Dr. Widya said that the resilience situation of health workers at the frontline in handling COVID-19 patients requires the strongest immune system in order to continue to serve the needs of COVID-19 patient services.
"The simple thing that the community can do in helping health workers is to prepare to strengthen the immune system in the family, besides that it is necessary to live a healthy lifestyle with the aim of reducing the COVID-19 morbidity rate," she said.
"A new healthy lifestyle can be started by changing the diet to be low in calories (carbohydrates), but high in protein, vegetables, and fruit. Another effort is to regularly do light exercise while sunbathing during the time when ultra violet (UV) rays are at their highest. This is important to increase natural vitamin D," said Dr. Widya.
The Key to Living with Viruses
Building the body's immune system is not only achieved by consuming vitamins C, D, zinc, multivitamins, but also with a lifestyle of a low-carb diet, rich in fruit vegetables and protein.
"We should also do light exercise in the sun that is rich in vitamin D, manage good stress management, sleep well for 6-8 hours a day. God willing, we can end the pandemic and achieve herd immunity optimally," said Dr. Widya Murni.
"People must also be literate about the importance of health and also understand that vitamin C, D, zinc, probiotics, multivitamins, need to be consumed every day," she continued.
The human body cannot form its own vitamin C, so it needs vitamin C intake from outside to support immunity. Meanwhile, the fulfillment of vitamin D needs cannot be negotiated.
"Optimization of vitamin D in the blood is needed to maintain the body's defenses during a pandemic. Although normal blood levels of vitamin D are between 30-100 ng/mL, we need to reach an optimal level of close to 100 ng/mL. Why? Because when the body is exposed to viruses and vaccines, vitamin D levels will drop dramatically. Those who only have Vitamin D levels below 30 ng/ml, if exposed to the COVID-19 virus, may have severe symptoms and may even need a ventilator," continued Dr. Widya Murni who plays an active role in handling COVID-19 in Jakarta.
PT Mecosin Indonesia as a pharmaceutical company has taken concrete action to support health workers. In addition to conducting Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities by providing vitamins and cough medicine to health workers, PT Mecosin Indonesia also distributed health packages containing medicines and health supplements at health centers and clinics in Jakarta City, in South Tangerang City, and in Kudus City.
In collaboration with PDUI, PT Mecosin Indonesia has also played an active role in educating the public about the importance of living a new healthy lifestyle during the pandemic through the media. In collaboration with local radios in various Indonesian cities, such as Cirebon, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Malang, and Purwokerto, PT Mecosin and PDUI have regularly held talk shows on various radios to voice the importance of healthy living behavior by having a balanced body nutrition.
Let's care together and not be ignorant. By starting to be disciplined in taking care of yourself and your beloved family, you will support health workers and help protect the nation.
Run the 5M health protocol, fulfill daily nutrition, exercise regularly, and schedule vaccines at the health facility and closest to where you live.
