Jakarta - Not only does severe air pollution in the Jakarta area and its surroundings also risk triggering a series of diseases in the community, especially regarding the respiratory tract. This has raised the concerns of a number of health practitioners who highlight the high risk of disease in residents who are still often active outdoors.
The Indonesian Ministry of Health revealed that there are six diseases that are most wary of the effects of irresponsible air quality in recent times. Among them is asthma, which is often a disease that a person already has, then worsens and relapses due to exposure to poor quality air.
"The three main (diseases) are first pneumonia or infection in the lungs, the second is ARI (Upper Respiratory Tract Infection) and the third is asthma because people with asthma will tend to have frequent relapses in air quality that does not improve," said Head of the Communication and Public Service Bureau of the Indonesian Ministry of Health Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi in a press conference, Thursday (31/8/2023).
"Long-term exposure to these pollutants, of course, there are three more diseases that we see the most. The first is lung cancer, tuberculosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease," she said further.
On this occasion, Dr Nadia also emphasized the importance of wearing masks in the midst of the current air situation, namely masks that effectively filter PM2.5. Likewise, people who experience coughs and colds are encouraged to immediately get health services.
"Our main essence is that if we are constantly exposed to air pollution, people with asthma will tend to have frequent attacks. Asthma is very unpleasant. So automatically, children can't go to school, can't study because they are not feeling well," he explained.
"Exposure to pollution will initially be like an allergic reaction. Sneezing, he's not sick but sneezing and coughing. Or this is why the cough doesn't go away but not because of smoking cough," concluded Dr. Nadia.
